Mesothelioma Cancer
Malignant Mesothelioma Cancer is a tumor of the pleura, peritoneum or the pericardium. The occurrence of pleural mesothelioma has a strong association with exposure to asbestos dust, and workers in the asbestos industry who develop such tumors are entitled to industrial compensation.

In other cases, however, there is no history of direct asbestos via clothes of relatives who had direct contact with asbestos, or they themselves had lived close to an asbestos factory. There is no curative treatment for the disease, but good results have occasionally been obtained from radical surgery for limited disease, from radiotherapy, and more recently from chemotherapy.

An estimated 2000 to 3000 new mesothelioma cases are diagnosed each year, in the United States. Approximately three fourths of these cases begin in the chest cavity and are called pleural mesothelioma. An additional 10% to 20% start in the abdomen and are called peritoneal mesotheliomas. And finally, those that start in the lining of the heart are called pericardial mesotheliomas but these are quite rare.

Although it is rare, mesothelioma is a very serious disease that is often at an advance stage when it is diagnosed.
